DESCRIPTION
"The Tournament of the Mace and Seal of Athenry" is a Buhurt International duelling and profight event hosted by 1316 Medieval Fight Club in Athenry. The event will take place on the front lawn of Athenry Castle across two outdoor lists, as part of the 20th Athenry Walled Towns Day.
The tournament will feature male and female divisions in sword and shield, longsword, sword and buckler, and polearm, run under current BI duelling rules, alongside selected profight bouts.
Held in celebration of Athenry’s Norman heritage, the event is delivered in association with Athenry Heritage Centre and Galway County Council, set against one of the most historic medieval sites in Ireland.
Competitors will contest for medals, trophies, and handcrafted prizes produced by local artists, inspired by the history and architecture of Athenry.
This event aims to deliver a high standard of international duelling competition in a unique historic setting, supported by experienced marshals, structured organisation, and a dedicated volunteer team.

FACILITIES
The event is being delivered in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of the Athenry Walled Towns Festival, and will benefit from the wider infrastructure and amenities associated with the festival.
On site, there will be multiple food vendors operating throughout the day, as well as portable toilet facilities. A dedicated ambulance will be present for the duration of the event, supported by multiple medical teams. In addition, 1316 Medieval Fight Club will have trained first responders on site at all times.
The venue is located within close proximity to Athenry town, which offers a wide range of accommodation options including hotels and Airbnb properties, along with numerous restaurants, cafés, and pubs.
There is ample car parking available within walking distance of the venue.
Approximately a five-minute walk from the event site is our club headquarters, the Old Ball Alley, which will be made available for overnight accommodation for fighters and support staff. Please note that sleeping equipment will not be provided, and attendees wishing to stay will need to bring their own. Any limited equipment available will be prioritised for support staff.
