The Crimson Tulips: Paving the Way for Women in Canadian Buhurt

Celebrating Strength and Sisterhood on International Women’s Day

On International Women’s Day, we take the opportunity to highlight fierce and determined women making strides in medieval combat. One such team is the Crimson Tulips, a fresh force in the Canadian buhurt scene. Formed with the goal of growing the women’s division in the country, they have quickly made their presence known.

A Team with a Mission

The Crimson Tulips emerged in early 2024, following discussions among Canadian fighters at Carolina Carnage. With members scattered across Eastern Canada, coordination was a challenge, but with the guidance of veteran fighter Joshua Friars at Toronto Armored Combat and Alexander Rosenthal-Rashi in Montreal, the team began to take shape. Training camps were organized, and their efforts bore fruit when the Tulips secured second place at their debut tournament. For many of them, it was their first experience in melees, yet they proved they were here to stay.

The Fighters Behind the Name

Though still a new team, the Crimson Tulips boast a roster of talented and determined fighters. Toronto-based duo Gen Drouin and Lindsay McRae bring impressive grappling and control, their strength not to be underestimated. Rising star Marie-Soleil Grenier has rapidly mastered takedown techniques, showcasing her unwavering dedication. Wielding the two-handed axe, Anna von Wesselborg delivers crushing blows with brute power. Meanwhile, Catherine Patry-Sauve and Gabrielle Bastieri use their skills to create chaos and set up takedowns.

A Name That Commands Attention

The name ‘Crimson Tulips’ was chosen to embody both the divine feminine and the raw power of violence and uninhibited rage. While the tulip symbolizes beauty and resilience, the crimson shade hints at the blood and intensity of battle.

A Milestone Debut

One of the team’s most significant achievements so far was competing in the Women’s Open category at the Tournament of the Tower in fall 2024. Their primary goal was to learn and refine their skills, but they went beyond expectations. The Tulips defeated the Knights Hall’s Vandals and put up a fierce fight against Ordo Obelios, ultimately securing second place on the podium.

Overcoming Challenges

The Canadian buhurt scene faces two major challenges: the vast geographical distances between fighters and the need for more female recruits. To combat these issues, the team has established a strong social media presence, engaging with communities beyond buhurt, including martial arts, LARPing, and HEMA enthusiasts. Additionally, training camps at Toronto Armored Combat have helped bridge the physical divide, allowing the Tulips to develop as a cohesive unit.

Training for Battle

Staying connected is essential for a team spread across such a wide region. The Crimson Tulips rely on virtual communication to discuss tactics, training regimens, and to keep each other motivated. In-person training camps are used to refine techniques, while consistent weekly training ensures continued growth and development. Recent Success at Carolina Carnage Fest 2025

The Crimson Tulips continued their momentum into 2025 with an outstanding performance at Carolina Carnage Fest. Competing in the 12v12 category alongside River Sirens and Chaos Cryptide, they showcased their growth and teamwork, battling their way to the finals and securing silver medals.

The Strength of the Tulips

As a new team, the Crimson Tulips embrace their role as underdogs. They approach every tournament as an opportunity to gain experience, sharpen their skills, and make a name for themselves. With nothing to lose and everything to prove, they thrive in the challenge.

Building a Supportive Team Culture

The Tulips prioritize open communication and mutual support. Constructive feedback is encouraged, fostering an environment of respect and admiration. They are driven by the desire to make an impact on the international stage and to leave a mark on Canadian buhurt history.
